During 2020-2024, a decrease in the pollution of white storks was observed for the first time in Ararat Valley, which evidenced by the research conducted by the Armenian branch of the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU).
The Armenian branch of NABU informs that in 2024 the pollution of white storks in the Ararat valley (Ararat and Armavir Region) makes up 42.5% (a decrease of 15.6% compared to 2023). In particular, the pollution of white storks in Ararat Region, according to nests, makes up 56.7% (a decrease of 9.1% as compared to 2023), 30.6% in Armavir Region (a decrease of 21.3% as compared to 2023). In general, the area of pollution in Ararat Valley has decreased by 1%.
"There is also a decrease in the intensity of contamination per individual from 'highly contaminated' to 'slightly contaminated', but there are still quite a lot of 'highly contaminated' individuals. During the counting conducted in 2024, it became clear that the problem of pollution also partially includes Yerevan, Aragatsotn and Kotayk Regions. The decrease in pollution may be due to a few natural and man-made circumstances, which will be more clearly demonstrated after the analysis is completed," the press release states.
