The level of air pollution in Yerevan several times exceeds the permissible norms of the World Health Organization. "People live in an aggressive environment in the capital, and the only way is to increase green spaces. Is there an opportunity to establish new green areas in Yerevan?", EcoLur asked Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan during the closing press conference for 2023.
"We have 5 air quality devices installed in different parts of Yerevan, and only one device showed negative indicators in the parts where intensive construction is being carried out. Now we force all the developers to install these devices near the construction sites. For years, we have had a significant decrease in green spaces, construction works are gathering dust, the number of cars has increased, and naturally, the most important thing here is landscaping," Tigran Avinyan noted.
According to him, the increase in green spaces in Yerevan is one of the priorities of the municipality. "We plan to establish 250-300 hectares of new green areas in the coming five-year period and exceed the minimum threshold of 8 square meters per capita. We have 200 hectares of free space only in a part adjacent to Monte Melkonyan street, and our political position is that this space should be a dense green, beautiful, modern park, which will enrich Yerevan's green fund", Tigran Avinyan stated.
According to the mayor, 35 hectares of new forest were planted in different parts of Yerevan, around 10 parks were improved, and new recreation areas were established during 2023.
