Transport Sector Reforms in Yerevan
At a press conference held on September 15, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan presented the programs implemented and planned in the capital’s transportation system.

In 2025, 171 new buses were added to the city’s routes, replacing about 105 old buses operated by private companies. “The new buses have greater capacity and are more efficient from an environmental perspective,” Tigran Avinyan noted.

According to the Mayor, the number of trolleybuses has also increased. This year, 45 new trolleybuses are expected to be purchased, with the advance payment to be transferred soon. Their operation will begin in the first quarter of 2026, resulting in a complete renewal of Yerevan’s trolleybus network.

The next stage envisages the introduction of 250 electric 18-meter buses into the capital, with ongoing negotiations currently underway with international partners. “We also have a program within which two bus depots are planned to be restored,” Avinyan noted.

The Mayor also addressed planned works in Yerevan’s metro system. “Large-scale programs are being carried out in the capital’s metro: engines have been repaired and purchased, trains renovated, escalators replaced in different stations, and tunnel, fire safety, and water supply systems, along with other critical infrastructure, have been modernized,” he said.

According to Tigran Avinyan, the scale of ongoing work in the metro is unprecedented. In particular, the “Ajapnyak” station project is being implemented, which, due to its complexity and required assessments, is unique in the last 35 years. “For the Ajapnyak station, we have a project that has passed the final examinations of the primary phase. A three-stage tender is planned: the first stage for the tunnel section—from Barekamutyun metro station to the gorge bridge; the second for the gorge bridge itself; and the third for the construction of the tunnel and the station,” he said.

The Mayor also mentioned that work is underway on the “Surmalu” metro station project. “At present, an economic feasibility and capital investment program is being developed. It is planned to be implemented in the format of a community-private partnership,” Avinyan emphasized.
