This year is the 10ht anniversary of Armenian accidence to the Aarhus Convention.

“Transparency international Anticorruption Center” NGO President Sona Ayvazyan said in her interview with the journalists, “For example, if a decision is made to develop a mine, people should be informed about this as soon as possible, so as they can take appropriate measures of they oppose to this project. In Armenia it’s vice versa, the decision is adopted and people are informed about mine development in the projecting stage when nothing much can be changed.”

She also said it’s the second time the Aarhus Convention Compliance found Armenia in breach of the convention because of failure to implement a number of provisions, particularly site development of Teghout and Dalma Gardens.

Under Environmentalist Karine Danielyan, two main provisions out of three - access to information and public participation in decision-making are at least partially complied with, nevertheless there are serious problems with the judgments delivered by the judiciary - access to justice.

“We still don’t have any example when be brought a case to the court and the court will deliver a judgment in favor of environment.”
