Azatek Settlement in Vayots Dzor Region, Armenia, To Have Two New Solar Stations

RA Environment Ministry has issued a positive conclusion to the applications filed by "EDM SOLAR" and "ET SOLAR" companies for the construction of the station with a number of requirements mandatory for fulfilment.

One of the requirements is that expired or damaged solar photovoltaic modules ("EDM SOLAR" -  9360 pieces, "ET SOLAR"  - 10738) as hazardous waste containing lead, chromium, cadmium, silicon, other materials, will be stored, transferred, processed, neutralized by the company after the end of the operation of the stations under the supervision of Azatek Municipality. One of the expert requirements is the implementation of social programs by companies in Azatek settlement.

It should be noted that RA Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Hakob Vardanyan informed "EcoLur" that Armenia does not have a normative base regulating the issues of use, neutralization, storage and neutralization of solar photovoltaic panels. During a public hearing in Azatek on April 28, 2022, a company representative said that after the plant was put into operation, the hazardous waste would be handed over to companies with a neutralization and storage license.

EcoLur welcomes the first steps taken by the Environmental Impact Assessment Center of RA Environment Ministry in regulating the issue of hazardous waste management in the field of solar energy, as well as the adoption of social and environmental responsibility policies by existing businesses.
