At a press conference on September 15, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan presented the greening programs implemented in the capital in recent years, as well as those planned for the near future.
According to Avinyan, more than 50 hectares of new green areas have been created in Yerevan in recent years, all of which are fully equipped with irrigation systems. In several administrative districts, the mapping of green areas has already been completed.
Urban forests have been established in Davtashen and Nor Nork, while restoration works are still underway in the Nork-Marash and Student Parks. Under the next project, a new urban forest will be planted on about 35 hectares near Lvovyan Street.
Construction works have been completed for the park between St. Sargis Church of Nor Nork and Davit Bek Street, as well as for the central park located between the 1st and 2nd districts of Davtashen. Improvement works have been carried out in the Renaissance Park of Nor Nork’s 2nd district. Issues identified in the Tork Angegh Park are currently being resolved by the contractor.
By the end of the year, afforestation works will begin on about 8.5 hectares near Nubarashen Highway.
According to Avinyan, this year the feasibility study of the Dalma Community Park was completed. “It concerns an area of about 250 hectares. In cooperation with the Asian Development Bank, a concept has been developed and submitted to the Office for Implementation of Investment Programs,” he said.
The Mayor noted that there is a legal dispute concerning Komitas Park, as the private lessee has failed to maintain it properly. “We hope the issue will soon be resolved, the park will return to the community’s balance, and we will bring it to proper condition,” Avinyan said.
According to him, a similar problem exists with Davit Anhaght Park, where works are being carried out under a charitable program. Avinyan noted that this year three platforms are planned to be fully completed, with the fourth to be finished next spring. “In this case, the Municipality itself is not making an investment,” he added.
The Municipality has also initiated a four-year program, which includes additional environmental restrictions in the fields of mining, construction, and urban development. “For future buildings and complexes, it will be mandatory not only to preserve general green areas but also to plant specific types of trees according to the size of the constructed areas,” Avinyan said.
