Armenia plans to restore degraded forest ecosystems, expand forest cover, and enhance the resilience of forests to climate change by 2030. These objectives are set out in Order No. 100-L of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Armenia, Hambardzum Matevosyan, entitled "On Approving Biodiversity Conservation Targets of the Republic of Armenia and Action Plan for 2026–2030."
Armenia's national goals and targets have been developed on the basis of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted under the Convention on Biological Diversity, which aims to halt biodiversity loss, promote ecosystem restoration, and ensure the sustainable use of biodiversity.
The 2026–2030 Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation of the Republic of Armenia includes five goals and 30 targets.
With regard to forests, Target 2, which focuses on the restoration of degraded ecosystems, provides for the restoration of at least 15,000 hectares of degraded forest ecosystems by 2030.
Target 10 aims to restore forest landscapes and enhance their resilience to climate change by 2030, with the objective of mitigating climate-related impacts on biodiversity and promoting carbon sequestration.
Within the framework of this target, Armenia plans to:
- increase forest cover by 12,500 hectares;
- promote forest management practices aimed at enhancing the climate resilience of forest landscapes;
- reduce communities' demand for fuelwood by at least 30 percent.
Under Target 12, "Promote Sustainable Forestry and Agriculture,"
it is planned to:
- introduce and implement a system of global indicators and criteria for sustainable forest management during 2026–2029;
- promote the application of non-chemical methods of disease control in the forest enterprises of ArmForest SNCO during 2026–2028.
To be continued.
