“My pension is 38,000 AMD, so we safe it starting from April to the autumn to afford buying this 4 cum of wood so as not to get cold in the winter,” said Feliks Safaryan, one of elderly residents in Margahovit Community, Lori Region.
The Margahovit community with a population of around 4000 people is located on the verge of Gugark forests. The problem with wood arises here with the advent of winter. “Our village is located 1760 meters above sea level and we have extremely severe winters lasting 5-6 months. 90% of the people have gas supply, but not all can afford gas and that’s why they need wood,” Community Head Samvel Ananyan presents the situation in the community.
As a near-forest community, Margahovit residents annually are entitled to 8 cum of free-of-charge fallen deadwood. Nevertheless, the fallen deadwood in the forest is not sufficient and the residents have to obtain fuel wood from the felling spots allotted by the forest enterprise, “Fuel wood is taken out from cutting spots in a legal manner, but if it were more affordable, it would be better,” the community said.
