RA Environment Ministry and RA Nature Protection and Mining Inspection did not answer RA Ombudsman's question when the term of Teghut copper-molybdenum mining project expert assessment opinion expired, as it is mentioned in the 2019 annual report on the activities of RA Human Rights Defender, the state of protection of human rights and freedoms.
"In response to the inquiry, a limited and incomplete response was received from the competent authorities, stating that the positive opinion on the operation of Teghut mine was issued in 2006." It should be reminded that the term of the positive opinion BP-135 given to Teghut project expired in 2014, after which the mine was put into operation without conducting a new environmental impact assessment.
In its communication, RA Ombudsman also referred to the pollution of the environment as a result of Teghut mining, the problem of the tailing dump, and the supervision over this activity. "It is necessary to ensure proper supervision over the operation of Teghut mine from the view point of compliance with the requirements of the legislation," the Ombudsman said in his communication.
