Positive Conclusion to EIA of Geological Prospecting for Vardenis Polymetallic Mine

On December 9, 2022, RA Environment Ministry issued a positive conclusion to "Mendia Resources" LLC's application for preliminary environmental impact assessment (EIA) of geological prospecting at the multi-metal mining site of Vardenis, Vayots Dzor Region.

Reminder: RA Vayots Dzor Regional Municipality submitted a negative opinion regarding the application of "Mendia Resources" LLC, stating that the planned activity contradicts the requirements of RA Water Code. The representatives of the political society also expressed a negative opinion about the application, environmental organizations stating that the planned works pose risks for the project of creating ecological corridors in Armenia and contradict the RA Mining Code. The population of Vardahovit village of Yeghegis community was also against the geological prospecting, which failed the public discussion scheduled for October 14, 2022.

In its EIA application, the company stated that the areas demarcated by the coordinates of the Vardenis multi-metal mining geological prospecting sites do not coincide with the regional project "Support for Establishment of Ecological Corridors" implemented by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Ministry of Environment.

The Ministry concluded that the geological prospecting does not pose an immediate threat to the region's environmental components (soil, water, air, biodiversity) and social environment and issued a positive conclusion.
