Macedon Aleksanyan, a resident of Jermuk resort town in Vayots Dzor Region, intends to apply to the European Court for Human Rights for Amulsar gold mine project development.
Amulsar gold mine project, which is implemented by Lydian International Company is located in a distance of 12 km from Jermuk resort town. Under the recent mine development project, Gndevaz, Gorhayq and Saravan small communities were recognized as project affected communities, nevertheless, Jermuk was not included in this list.
“Nature Protection Ministry has twice applied to Jermuk Municipality to hold public hearings and to express their opinions. Nevertheless, there was no response,” Macedon Aleksanyan said. In reply to Macedon Aleksanyan’s enquiry, Nature Protection Ministry advised with an official letter, ““Environmental Expertise” SNCO applied to Jermuk Municipality on 08.05.2012 to receive an opinion of the project documentation of Amulsar mine and on 23.07.2013 to take part in the public hearings for the professional opinion, but they haven’t replied to any letter so far.”
Jermuk residents have also called upon the court to recognize Jermuk as Amulsar project affected community. “Now we have passed all domestic court instances in Armenia, starting from the Court of First Instance to Cassation Court… And they all rejected us… I am going to apply to the European court for Human Rights,” Macedon Aleksanyan said.
