Climate Change Adaptability Program Development Deadline Extended for One Year

Due to COVID-19 epidemic, the Government of the Republic of Armenia has extended the deadlines for a number of measures envisaged in the National Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan. One of these measures is the elaboration of the draft decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia "On approving the program of climate change adaptation in the energy sector" and its presentation to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, which should have been carried out in the 4th quarter of 2021. By the decision of the executive, the term was extended until the 4th quarter of 2022.

The main climatic factors affecting the energy sector are as follows:

·  Atmospheric air temperature

• Mudslides / landslides

•  Wind speed

•  Thunderstorm

• Lack of water

According to Armenia’s fourth national communication on climate change, the average annual temperature across the territory of Armenia is projected to increase by up to 1.60C by 2040, by 3.30C - by 2070 and by 4.70C - by 2100, relative to the baseline annual average (5.50C) for 1961- 1990.

As for atmospheric precipitations, these are projected to decline by up to 2.7% by 2040, 5.4% - by 2070 and 8.3% - by 2100, relative to the baseline annual average (592 mm) for 1961-1990.

Risks of Climate Change on Energy System

·  Water scarcity will lead to hydropower productivity losses, increase in the water demand required the for cooling of nuclear power plants and thermal power plants,

·  Rising temperatures can affect asset load, capacity, generator efficiency, equipment performance, product quantity / quality,

·  Critical failures can occur at dangerous events during coupling.
