Russia to Assist Armenia in  ANPP Radioactive Waste Management

RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures represented by Minister Gnel Sanosyan and "Rosatom" state corporation represented by Deputy General Director of "Rosatom" Nikolai Spassky signed a protocol on the deepening of strategic partnership in the fields of nuclear and non-nuclear atomic energy. The document was signed on June 28 by the RA of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Gnel Sanosyan and Rosatom State Corporation and Deputy General Director of "Rosatom" Nikolai Spassky during the meeting of the delegation led by the latter.

It envisages cooperation in terms of the lifetime extension of the second power unit, the construction of a new nuclear power unit in Armenia, decommissioning and management of ANPP radioactive wastes.

The participants of the meeting discussed the comprehensive program of Armenian-Russian cooperation in energy and non-energy projects signed on 19 April 2022.

 "Within the framework of bilateral cooperation with the Republic of Armenia, the issues of decommissioning and management of radioactive waste were declared comprehensive for the first time,” as Deputy General Director of "Rosatom", Director of International Affairs Department Nikolai Spassky outlined.

"Now “TVEL” OJSC, as the base organization for the liquidation of the nuclear legacy of the CIS, provides support to the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States in the implementation of programs for the decommissioning of all types of radioactive waste, in the development of national management systems, including the creation of national operators in the matter of waste management," Eduard Nikitin said, Head of Strategy in Nuclear Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management of "TVEL" JSC.

As a result of the visit, an agreement was reached to visit the Armenian NPP to discuss issues related to the decommissioning of radioactive waste, preparation for the development of the management system, including the prospect of creating a radioactive waste burial site.

At the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure the results of the discussion and the agreements reached were presented at the meeting held with Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan. The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of cooperation with the Rosatom state corporation.
