Azerbaijan is going to officially ask the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Union to take measures for closing the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, the Azerbaijani news agency 1news.az reported.
The request for shutting down the second reactor of the Metsamor-based nuclear plant is currently being prepared. Director of the Azerbaijani Institute of Radiation Problems Adil Garibov said the initiative is also supported by Georgia and Turkey.
“The government bodies and institutions in the country are collecting information on the nuclear plant’s environmental impact. Turkey and Georgia currently hold discussions over the issue too,” Garibov said. “I think we’ll reach a common decision after joint discussions. We are hopeful that the International Atomic Energy Agency and the European Union will also support Azerbaijan.”
