At its extraordinary meeting on 31 January, Jermuk Aldermen's Council rejected the proposal made by Minister for Territorial Administration and Development Suren Papikyan to abolish the previous resolution on banning metallic mining in the area of the community.

6 members of Aldermen's Council out of 11 attended the meeting. In her interview with EcoLur, Aldermen's Council members Hasmik Sargsyan and Aartush Simonyan noted that all 6 members reached a unanimous decision to reject this proposal. 'We don't know what will happen next, but we don't agree with it. Our position is connected to Amulsar mine as we oppose its mining and we also oppose the development of other metallic mines,' Artush Simonyan said.

The extraordinary meeting was appointed after Minister for Territorial Administration and Development Suren Papikyan sent an assignment to Vayots Regional Head Trdat Sargsyan, which says, 'We would like you to consider and propose Jermuk, Aldermen's Council to abolish or abolish its decision N 88-Ա dated on 18 December 2018 guided by the provisions of Article 98 of RA Law 'On Self Governance'. In his turn, Regional Head suggested Jermuk Community Head Vardan Hovhannisyan take measures to abolish or amend the abovementioned resolution of the Aldermen's Council.

Environmentalists are qualifying this initiative as ' exercising pressure'.

'Certain pressure is being exercised on Jermuk Aldermen's Council in regard to approving the public petition signed by 3000 residents of the community on banning metallic mining in Jermuk and declaring its area as environmental and economic area. The pressure is being exercised by the Armenian Government and Vayots Dzor Regional Municipality. We announce that we will support Jermuk residents and the members of Aldermen's Council. The community opinion is powerful,' the Armenian Environmental Front has posted on Facebook.
