Irrigated Land Areas in Shirak and Lori Regions To Increase, $1 Million To Be Allocated for Modernization of Existing Pumping Stations

The irrigated land areas in Shirak and Lori Regions will increase, 1 million USD will be allocated for the modernization of existing pumping stations. “Transition to low-carbon irrigation technologies in Lori and Shirak regions of Armenia to increase productivity, improve food security and living standards” project has been launched. The launch presentation of the project funded by the Japanese government and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure took place on May 10, 2023.

The purpose of the project is to support the implementation of Armenia's "Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCS) for 2021-2030" under the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, within the framework of which it is planned to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the use of energy for irrigation of agricultural lands in Lori and Shirak Regions, support sustainable agriculture and increase irrigated land.

At the end of the project, $1 million is planned to modernize the target "Ayrum-Tchotchkan", "Tchotchkan" two-stage pumping stations operating in Lori Region and "Benyamin" pumping station operating in Shirak Region with energy-efficient pumps and equipping them with photovoltaic plants connected to the network.
