The executive intends to solve the water problem in Ararat Valley by increasing environmental fees. On 5 September the Armenian government approved the draft law on making amendments to RA Law “Soil Management and Environmental Fees”. The draft law reviews the procedure of calculating the environmental fee for the water use for fishing purposes. If the National Assembly adopts these amendments, the rate of 5% in Ararat and Armavir Regions will be increased and set in 50% of the total amount of underground water reserves, as well as the rates of environmental fees set for not having a water usage permit will be ten times instead of three times for   Ararat and Armavir Regions and five times for other regions of Armenia.

As a result, the government is expecting to create a more regulated and balanced state of water resource use in Ararat Valley in environmental viewpoint, where economic benefits will be assessed as compared with factual environmental losses that Ararat basin faces nowadays.

The draft law has been drawn up by Nature Protection Ministry of Armenia.
