The water in Armenia is used irrationally, as First Nature Protection Minister Simon Papyan told EcoLur. “Here malfunction both the competent body – Nature Protection Ministry, which implements the management of water resources, and the State Committee on Water Industry, which manages water systems. If drinking water losses make up 80%, while irrigation water losses from 40% to 50%, it’s impermissible,” Simon Papyan said.
Under the “Strategy and Plan of Actions for Combating Desertification in the Republic of Armenia”, we lose 80% of our water. The largest water consumer in Armenia is agriculture: in 2013 the half of total water was used for agricultural needs. Here fish breeding has its own place. If the intake of underground springs made 45.5% of the total water intake, in 2013 the fish farms took 38.3% of the total underground waters.
Simon Papyan also covered the problem of sewage, “We can’t properly clean the sewage and pollute the nature, which will make up 215,000 tons in 2013.”
It’s noteworthy that the Asian Development Bank wants to introduce the model of water resources management in other countries.
