As of April 10, 2020, the level of Lake Sevan was 1900.47 m. In the period from January 1 to April 10, 2020, in case of transferring 37,824 million cubic meters of water to the lake through Arpa-Sevan tunnel, the level of Lake Sevan has increased by only 4 cm compared to the beginning of the year. Meanwhile during the same period in 2019, the level of the lake had risen by 9 cm due to the non-operation of the water tunnel.
According to Levon Aziziyan, Acting Director of Hydrometeorological and Monitoring Center SNCO, the low level of Lake Sevan in 2020 compared to the same period last year is due to meteorological conditions.
In his conversation with EcoLur, Levon Aziziyan said, "The weather conditions in Lake Sevan in March 2020 were unfavorable for the lake water regime. The average monthly air temperature was 4-5 degrees above normal, which caused the evaporation from the lake to be higher than normal, whereas the amount of monthly precipitation was lower than the norm, making 20-60%. Under these conditions, the level of the lake rose by only 1 cm during March.”
