As it’s known, the Scientific-Expert Committee on Lake Sevan Preservation has submitted its report for 2014. EcoLur presents some of its comments:
Comments to Point 6: As a matter of fact, the State Committee on Water Industry made a proposal for water outlet of 240 million cum water from Lake Sevan, i.e. additional water outlets more by 70 million cum that the statutory 170 million set in RA Law “On Lake Sevan”. The proposal was first considered by the Scientific-Expert Committee on Lake Sevan, which didn’t and couldn’t give any opinion on increasing the water outlets by 100 million cum (as the report says), as such proposal wasn’t filed. In this regard, the violations were mentioned in the Ombudsman’s report for 2014.
Comments to Point 3: based on Point 6, Point 3 of the report shall also be outlined, which says: For our we would like to mentation that according to water intake schedule from Lake Sevan approved by the Armenian Government, the last intake was carried out on 27 September, though the governmental resolution mentions 1 September.
According to the Ministry of Emergency States, water outlets were performed on 7 September at 6 cum/sec staring from 18:00 and 8 cum/sec starting from 15:00. As a result, houses were flooded in Jrarat Village, Kotayq Rgion, and Ddmashen Village, Gegharkounik Region. Villagers suffered, and huge damage was caused to harvest. Nevertheless, the report doesn’t say anything on the opinion of the committee on this regard.
Comments to Point 9: As a matter of fact, the committee issued two opinions contradicting each other. One is negative issued in 2012, the second issued in 2014 is positive taking into consideration that risks listed in the same opinion remained the same and no measures are planned to minimize water and soil pollution from open pit mining and million tons of wastes containing lead, cadmium, zinc and other heavy metals with gold concentration of 0.7-0.9 grams per a ton of ore.
