Global Witness: Unprecedented Number of Environmentalists Killed WorldWide in 2020

2020 was the deadliest year for environmental activists. According to a report by the international non-governmental organization Global Witness, an unprecedented number of 227 environmentalists were killed in the world last year, which is 25 more than a year ago, according to www.eadaily.com .

Nearly one-third of environmentalist killings are related to deforestation, mineral extraction, construction of hydropower plants, and large-scale agribusiness protests.

Nearly three-quarters of the killings took place in Latin America. In the first place, as last year, is Colombia, where 65 environmentalists were killed. 30 environmentalists were killed in Mexico, 20 in Brazil and 17 in Honduras.
