Armenian environmentalists gain success over Trchkan Waterfall
Tert.am
A group of Armenian environmentalists is having the first tangible success after days of combat to prevent the construction of a hydro power station on a river in Armenia’s north.
The activists of the “Let’s Preserve the Trchkan Waterfall civil initiative have spent now five days in a tent camp set up right in the centre of the construction area high in the mountains.
In their Facebook accounts the activists said that the main bulldozer left the area late on Saturday. Other equipment are also due to leave soon, they added.
The activists also said that they are being supported by the locals, other environmentalists who visit them regularly, provide them with food and spend time with them. Journalists in their turn visit them and cover their campaign.
“Today, a middle-aged couple from Azatan village who after having watched the reportage of the GALA TV visited us unexpectedly. They brought us food and spent the whole day with us,” read one of the Facebook statuses.
A construction company called Robshin is planning to build a hydro power station before the waterfall and has already changed the direction of the river bed which the environmentalists claim will change the ecosystem.
The activists also said that they were visited also by the police officers who were very respectful.
One of the Facebook statuses said that the mood in the tent camp is “triumphant, decisive, practical and very gay", despite the cold weather and living inconveniences”.
The Armenian environmentalists also thanked all those who support have so far supported them and are doing so now.
