The disastrous situation in Ararat Valley is the result of the poor management of the water resources in the artesian basin of Ararat Valley, as Hovtashat community residents, Ararat Region, think. Hovtashat has over 70 artesian wells, where water is pumped out.
“We are suing artesian wells both for irrigation and drinking water, and Nature Protection Ministry is closing down not illegal wells, but wells not suitable for use any longer. We don’t oppose to it,” Hovtashat residents told EcoLur. Hovtashat resident use only artesian wells, as they don’t have irrigation system. “…In the past Hovtashat residents used to take water from the canal, but now it has dried out,” the residents said. “We don’t pay for water and we don’t have any agreement with water using companies… They deprived us of any opportunity to take water from the canal.”
