If the mining companies don’t solve their problems with the tailing dumps, Nature Protection Ministry will demonstrate serious approaches even stopping the activities of the companies, as Nature Protection Minister Aramayis Grigoryan said at the press conference on 11 August summarizing 100 days of his holding office.
Responding to Nature Protection Minister’s statement, EcoLur is starting to publish the findings of the monitoring on the tailing dumps implemented by EcoLur.
Thus, the heap leach facility owned by GeoProMining Gold Company is located near Ararat Town in Ararat Region. Under the official data of the Ministry for Emergency States, this tailing dump with the projected capacity of 12 million cum was already full of the tails of 10 million cum on 2012. Since then the fullness of the tailing dump has significantly increased, as GeoProMining Gold Company has twice increased mining volumes in Sotq gold mine. The tailing dumps doesn’t have any isolation layer, which results in the metals penetrating into the core, where a powerful artesian basin is located.
