Heritage Party Deputy Zaruhi Postanjyan regrets that she wasn’t able to broach the environmental issues of Lake Sevan and the Teghut Forest at the recent PACE June session.
“As an individual member of the Armenian delegation I have the right to address the session on three occasions and once on behalf of the delegation, if I am so appointed,” Deputy Postanjyan told “Hetq”.
“I used all four opportunities. Twice, I spoke about the internal situation in Armenia and the other two times I replied to Turkish and Azeri deputies regarding the issue of refugees. I didn’t get a chance to talk about environmental matters even though I had prepared a statement,” she continued.
The deputy argued that had the other delegation members responded to the Azeri deputy and not remained idle, she would have been able to speak about Lake Sevan and Teghut at the PACE session.
“Our delegation is comprised of eight members and can make twenty-four appearances, but only four were made. Of these, three were in defense of the ruling regime in Armenia.”
We should remind readers that before leaving for Strasbourg, Deputy Postanjyan declared that she was preparing a flyer to distribute to PACE deputies regarding the threats posed to the Teghut forest if the mine was put into operation. The flyers were handed out, but the content had nothing to do with “Save Teghut” but rather with the theme, “Amnesty is no Justice”.
“I want to present a bill regarding Teghut at the next PACE session in September-October of this year. I’ll also try to include Georgian and Azerbaijani deputies since the ensuing pollution will also affect them. The Debed River flows into the Kur, which flows into the Arax, eventually pouring into the Caspian Sea,” Deputy Postanjyan added.
