Waste Recycling To Be Implemented in Consolidated Communities in Sevan

It is planned to implement a waste management policy in Armenia, for which Sevan consolidated community has been chosen as a pilot community. On October 28, 2022, the opening workshop of "Waste Management Policy in Armenia" four-year project financed by Sweden took place at the American University of Armenia.

Within the framework of the project, it is planned to implement a waste cycling and sorting system in Sevan consolidated community by providing waste bins and garbage trucks to the community. It is also planned to collect hazardous waste, including batteries. Another component of the project will introduce an extended producer responsibility system, according to which companies that produce or import waste products will be charged according to the volume of products they produce or import.

Harutyun Alpetyan answered EcoLur's question about the fate of the sorted waste in Sevan in the future. Probably, the collected waste will be stored in Sevan community, will accumulate to specific volumes, and then will transported to Yerevan for processing. Regarding the collection of hazardous waste or possible processing, the project manager responded, “We need to find ways to collect and store them safely first. There is a large capacity for processing hazardous waste in Persia. It is the state mission to establish some relations with other state authorities in this matter."
