To What Extent Was "Yerevan Green City Action Plan" Discussed with Participation of Representatives of Civil Society and Yerevan Municipality?

Most of the population of Armenia, more than one million people, is concentrated in Yerevan. As the population grows, the problems of the capital also increase. The problems of green spaces, air and water quality of the capital are especially worrying. The Yerevan Green City Action Plan, approved by Yerevan’s Council of Elders in 2017, is aimed at solving these problems. It was developed within the framework of "Green City" project of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

"Yerevan's Green City Action Plan" was discussed at "Ecolur" press club by state and public sector representatives․

According to Meri Harutyunyan, Deputy Director of Implementation Office of Development Investment Programs in Yerevan, the main directions of Yerevan's development policy are laid down in the plan - one of them being energy. Mary Harutyunyan mentioned that one of the problems of the capital is the loss of green spaces.

According to official data, the total area of green areas of Yerevan makes up 6760 hectares, out of which 906.8 hectares are public green areas. Mary Harutyunyan mentioned that green spaces in Yerevan increased by 35 hectares during 2022-2023. The green area per person is 8.3 square meters. Expert Dshkhuhi Sahakyan noted that the number made up 8.12 square meters in 2022.

The participants of the discussion also touched on the issue of development of the capital. It has a significant impact on air quality. Sometimes the capital is covered with dust clouds.

According to the municipality representatives, the system of air quality policy, methodology and monitoring has been improved within the framework of "Yerevan Green City Action Plan". In waste management sector, it is planned to build a new sanitary landfill site for municipal solid waste.

Reminder: "Yerevan's Solid Domestic Waste Management Plan" for the closedown of the existing Nubarashen landfill site and the construction of a new landfill site in accordance with international standards in the adjacent area has been canceled, as Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan said․ According to the mayor, implementation of a new project is being discussed with the World Bank.
