Around six years ago, Susanna Amirkhanyan founded LATE Environmental NGO, an organization dedicated to giving textile waste a second life by transforming it into new clothing, cushions, toys, and works of art. A portion of the collected materials is also recycled into secondary textile raw materials. More than 30 women are involved in these activities.
"Our goal is to demonstrate that textile waste is a resource. Textile waste and old clothes should not simply be thrown away. They can be transformed into beautiful works of art or become a source of income and economic opportunity for someone," says Susanna Amirkhanyan, whose apartment has been converted into a collection point for textile waste. People bring clothing, fabric, buttons, bags, and other textile items there.
LATE receives approximately two tonnes of textile waste each year, thereby reducing the amount of textile waste sent to landfills, where the synthetic materials it contains pose environmental risks. With adequate support, LATE could increase its annual collection capacity to 25 tonnes of textile waste.
The organization's work is fully aligned with the principles of the circular economy, and Susanna Amirkhanyan hopes to receive support from government authorities to expand and further develop her textile recycling initiatives.
