By 2030, Armenia plans to increase the amount of waste recycled, introduce the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, and reduce food waste and food overconsumption.
These objectives are set out in Order No. 100-L of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Armenia, Hambardzum Matevosyan, “On Approving Biodiversity Conservation Targets of the Republic of Armenia and Action Plan for 2026-2030.”
Target 19 of the Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan concerns improving the waste recycling rate and promoting opportunities for sustainable consumption choices.
One of the key measures planned in this area is to establish the legal framework for the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system and launch the system by 2030.
The target also envisages legislative amendments aimed at banning the production and sale of single-use plastic products and polyethylene bags and sacks.
In addition, legal acts are to be developed to regulate the disposal and recycling of pesticides and their containers, as well as to improve Law on Waste.
Waste management is also addressed under Target 20 of the Action Plan. By 2030, Armenia plans to reduce food waste and food overconsumption through targeted educational initiatives and awareness-raising campaigns.
To this end, educational activities are planned by 2030 for at least 10,000 schoolchildren and 3,000 students to raise awareness of food overconsumption and food waste reduction.
In addition, a pilot awareness-raising campaign is planned to be carried out in at least 30 food service establishments to raise awareness among visitors about the issue of food overconsumption.
