Powerful Pumps Set up in Ararat Valley May Cause Loss of Drinking Water

Hydrologist Ruben Yadoyan, PhD in Geological Sciences, thinks the water use system in Ararat Valley bears big risks for drinking water. So as not to allow the exhaustion of underground and artesian sources of Ararat Valley the government has adopted a decision to set meters for water in fish farms. Nevertheless, according to Ruben Yadoyan, if water users continue using powerful pumps, drinking water will turn into useless one. “Such powerful pumps can’t be used to pump water in Ararat Valley: water has three levels – the upper level is freshwater but useless for drinking. Drinking water can be found in two lower levels. Pumping out water from low depths mixes up the levels and turns drinking water into non-drinking. Besides, there are mineral sources under the cavity of Ararat Valley and they can also come up to the surface and get mixed up with drinking water,” Yadoyan said. At present there are 234 fish farms operating in Ararat Valley which use 450 wells for water. According to the estimations of specialists, about 800 million cubic meters of water is pumped out from the wells per year.
