“Environmental Academy” NGO: Uranium Probably Causing Amoulsar to be Called “Barren”

The topic of probable presence of uranium in Amoulsar (Vayost Dzor Region) keeps on worrying public. “I personally talked with Professor, Geologist Petros Aloyan in 2007 on the topic of uranium mines in Armenia. And he literally said that people noticed based on their own experience some areas and mountains don’t have any vegetation. That’s why this place was called “barren” (“amoul” in Armenian). At that time Aloyan expressed his opinion that “barrenness” may be conditioned by radioactive mine. I am sure Aloyan meant that very mountain, though we spoke only about uranium mines.” “Environmental Academy” representative Greta Gabrielyan has disseminated this letter as a response to EcoLur’s materials through the network of the Alliance of Public Environmental Organizations.
