Ban on Whitefish Fishing Not to Liking of Fishermen, While Lake Sevan Needs Restoration of Fish Stocks for Benefit of Al

In Gegharkunik Region, 26 people were arrested for mass hooliganism against Gegharkunik Region water patrol service officers and "Sevan National Park" SNOC employees who were monitoring the lake during the ban on whitefish fishing.

Reminder: the ban on whitefish is set from November 25, 2023 to January 20, 2024 due to the spawning period of whitefish.

However, the fishermen, dissatisfied with the ban, staged a protest demanding the abolition of the ban on whitefish fishing. Gegharkunik Regional Head Karen Sargsyan stated in an interview with News that there were discussions with fishermen. RA Environment Minister Hakob Simidyan also participated in the last discussion.

As a result of overfishing and the destruction of spawning grounds, Sevan has lost 2 subspecies of trout, whereas the summer trout, Gegharkuni, is on the verge of extinction. The khramulya has disappeared. Crayfish stocks have greatly decreased.

In recent years, there is a tendency to increase the biomass of whitefish, but the normal growth and optimal number of this fish species in the lake is still not ensured.

The fish is the assimilator of organic matter in the lake, the crayfish is in charge of the sanitation.

The restoration and sustainable use of fish resources in Lake Sevan is very important, which will contribute to the improvement of the ecological condition of the lake. The measures implemented in this direction should find the support of all of us for the benefit of Lake Sevan and for the benefit of all of us.
