An Armenian-Russian agreement on the construction of a new nuclear power plant (NPP) in Armenia has been signed in Yerevan as a result of Armenian-Russian presidential meeting, a NEWS.am correspondent reported.

Head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko stated that Russia can cover over 20% of construction costs. The project is estimated at U.S. \$ 5bn.

An Armenian-Russian company has been formed to implement the construction project. It will cover 40% of the costs, with 60% to be attracted from investors. Kiriyenko pointed out that the construction cost has not yet been specified.

The RA Government is negotiating with potential investors.

NEWS.am reminds readers that Rosatom is stockholder of the Metsamor-Inter RAO Armenian-Russian company, which is to construct the new, second, unit of the Metsamor NPP with a water-moderated water-cooled power reactor (ВВЭР-1200). The company is to complete the construction and put it into operation before one of the two currently operating reactors, ВВЭР-440, is put out of operation.

Several months ago the RA Government approved a draft of an Armenian-Russian agreement on cooperation in constructing new NPPs in Armenia. The agreement provides for the construction of NPPs with reactors with a capacity of 1,060 MW in conformity with the EUR standards.
