SHEVARNADZE CALLED GEORGIA TO TALKS WITH ARMENIA ON NUCLEAR PLANT SAFETY

ArmInfo – RBK

Georgian ex President Eduard Shevardnadze has called to the Georgian Government immediately to start negotiations with the Armenian authorities on the matter of the threat Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant poses to security and safety.

“As it turned out this nuclear power plant is in a complicated situation and has no safety guarantees and this apparently jeopardizes the whole region,” Shevarnadze said.

He thinks in such cases Georgian authorities “simply must start negotiations with Armenia and to do all the best so as to avoid possible disaster. According to the latest survey conducted by Georgian weekly “Week Palette” most respondents hold the opinion that the nuclear power plant in Armenia poses danger to the regional safety.” Out of 420 survey participants 86,3% stated that the nuclear power plant in Metsamor poses extreme threat for Georgia and its population. Only 3% respondents have the opposite viewpoint and suppose no threats exist. The rest could not give any definite answer to this question.
