Recently rather strange public hearings were held in Yeghvard. Several people have gathered to discuss what the benefits of a new tourist complex are for Yeghvard, which should be constructed on fertile land areas. At first sight 'Sis, Masis, and New Armenia' project is rather attractive: five star hotels will be built, while Yeghvard is not far from Yerevan. Yeghvard residents who only heard about this complex are very inspired. “But we are concerned that only one position is presented. The information is very one-sided. Already now people are collected signatures that they agree. This territory is one of the few territories in Armenia where we have quality land areas, not polluted and environmentally favorable,” says Mary Chakryan, Yeghvard Aarhus Center Coordinator. She and other activists are concerned with the question what the benefits of this project will be and what the assessment of probable damage is. Certainly it’s tourism that intends to make profits and is actively preparing for 2015. But it’s unknown what Yeghvard residents will get further.
